Lempuyang in Karangasem, Bali. Penataran Agung Lempuyang Temple is considered
as part of the complex around Mount Lempuyang, one of the very temples in Bali.
The temple on Mount Lempuyang, which is represented by the highest temple on
the summit of Mount Lempuyang, Pura Lempuyang Luhur, is one of the Sad Kahyangan
Jagad, or "six sacred places of the world", the six most sacred places of prayer
in Bali.
History
The establishment of prayer rooms around Mount Lempuyang is believed to precede
most temples on the island of Bali. The temples on Mount Lempuyang, represented
by Pura Lempuyang Luhur, the highest temple in the area, are grouped in one
temple complex which is Pura Sad Kahyangan Luhur Lempuyang. The group of
temples is considered part of the Sad Kahyangan Jagad, or "six holy places
of the world", the six holiest places of worship in Bali. According to
Balinese belief, they are an important point of the island and are meant
to provide spiritual balance for Bali.
The group of temples on Mount Lempuyang is also one of the groups of temples
in Bali known as Pura Kahyangan Padma Bhuwana. Each temple at Pura Kahyangan
Padma Bhuwana marks each of the eight major cardinal directions. Lempuyang
Luhur Temple represents the east (purwa) and the color is white.
This direction is associated with the realm of the Balinese god,
Penataran Agung Lempuyang Temple which was restored in 2001.
